Data SGP is a collection of aggregated student growth data that teachers, administrators and parents can use to make informed decisions about student learning and progress. It includes student-level metrics like test scores and growth percentiles as well as school-level measures like class size, enrollment rates and graduation rates and data aggregated at a district level for use in educator evaluation.
The data sgp website offers a number of ways to access and analyze this information. The main page is a searchable database of student growth data by date, subject and year. The site also offers detailed data reports for individual students, as well as summary charts and graphs that highlight trends in student growth. These charts and graphs provide an overview of student performance for a single subject area, grade level or school.
Each chart and graph is labeled with the date range, subject and year for which it was produced. Additionally, there is a drop down menu that allows users to select specific time periods for which they would like to view SGP data. This allows for more detailed comparisons between students over time.
SGP uses historical growth trajectories of Star examinees to project what their potential future trajectories could lead to, including the necessary growth needed for students to reach/maintain proficiency. These projections are then used to inform individualized instruction for each student.
The SGP system is designed to work with two common formats for longitudinal (time dependent) student assessment data: WIDE format and LONG format. For WIDE format data, each case/row represents a unique student and each column represents variables associated with that student at different times. For LONG format data, each case/row is separated into multiple rows that are linked together by a student’s unique ID number. The sgpData package, installed when you install the SGP software, includes exemplar WIDE and LONG format data sets (sgpData_LONG) to assist with managing this type of data.
We recommend the LONG format for operational analyses as it is simpler to manage and requires fewer data manipulation steps than the WIDE format. When selecting your data set, it is important to consider the size and complexity of your needs and the limitations of your current infrastructure before deciding on a format.
SGPs measure relative student growth on content area assessments and are reported on a 1-99 scale, with higher numbers indicating greater relative growth. SGPs are calculated using student score histories from the most recent assessment and a prior test in that same subject-matter. The prior test must be from a different testing window than the most recent assessment.
Students’ SGPs are compared to the growth of their academic peers on the same tests. This growth is based on the results of one or more of DESE’s subject-matter assessments that were administered within a single testing window. For example, students in grade 5 are compared to their peers’ growth on the WKCE and in grade 10 students are compared to their classmates’ growth on the MCAS.
