The Sidney Prize is awarded each month to an outstanding piece of journalism that appeared during the prior month. The winner is announced on the second Wednesday of each month. Nominations are welcomed for work that has been published on a website, in print or in a podcast. Submissions are screened by the committee, which may make minor edits for clarity and style. If you would like to nominate a piece of journalism, please submit it to the AJL website by the last day of the previous month.
The National Association of Scholars also offers a Sidney award at its national conference to an individual who has made distinguished contributions to the defense of academic freedom and the integrity of academic life. The award is named for the American philosopher Sidney Hook, a Phi Beta Kappa member who was devoted to the idea that liberal arts education should provide the foundation for a democratic society.
In this article, we examine why the Sidney Prize is so important and why it has been attacked by those who would limit academic freedom. We also propose a new way to assess the value of scholarly work, and we offer advice to those who wish to promote a free and responsible academy.
