The Sidney Prize for Socially-Conscious Journalism

In memory of the late Sidney Hillman, a founder of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and tireless activist for economic justice, the Hillman Foundation created this prize to honor socially-conscious journalism that fosters real and tangible improvements in the lives of people. The prize is awarded each month to an outstanding piece of journalism that appeared in print (newspaper or magazine) during the previous calendar month. Nominations are due by the last day of each month.

Winners receive a cash prize of $500 and their work will be featured on our website. Nominees are encouraged to submit multiple entries each month, but submissions must be different from a previous one in order to receive a separate prize for each new nomination. The winners are announced the second Wednesday of each month.

The Sydney Film Festival Awards 2023 have been announced. All winners will be presented with our festival signature mesmeric swirl award, designed and handmade in Sydney by Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs.
