The Sydney sdy pools are a testament to how political and societal pressures can impact a large infrastructure project. Beset by council infighting, claims of pork-barrelling and a lack of transparency, heritage concerns and criticism from health organisations, what was meant to be the world’s most beautiful pool is now a gaping hole, its budget blown out to more than $100m and its opening date now pushed back to 2025.

Despite the fact that nine in 10 Australians live within a 20-minute drive of a public swimming pool, access isn’t evenly distributed. In cities like Sydney, outer suburban councils have more than 134,000 residents per aquatic centre, compared to the inner city, where some areas have just over 7,000 people per pool facility.

These ocean pools, located in Sydney’s Royal National Park, are real whirlpools, filled and emptied with sea water according to the tides. Their unique shape and spectacular setting make them the ideal location for a leisurely dip or a swim with the kids. The calm waters are ideal for those not quite comfortable in the pounding surf, while the atmosphere is relaxed and admission is free.
